People Success: Rethinking enablement in a consultancy

In this blog, Cam Smith, Head of People Success at Opencast, shares what “People Success” means in practice, and why the role of the people function continues to evolve.

If you’ve ever spoken to someone at Opencast, you may have heard the phrase “People Success.” It’s in my job title, it’s the name of our team, and it’s something we talk about a lot internally. But it’s also a question I’m asked regularly: “What actually is People Success?”
The short answer is that People Success is how we enable our people to build their skills and progress their careers at Opencast. The longer answer is even more interesting.

Expanding the role of the people function

In many organisations, the people team is primarily associated with policies, processes and employee relations. Those things remain incredibly important, and at Opencast our People Operations team plays a vital role in ensuring the foundations of our people experience are strong.

Alongside this, we’ve developed a People Success approach that focuses more directly on career growth, capability development and enabling our consultants to perform at their best. Together, these functions allow us to balance great employee experience and strong organisational foundations with business performance.

The two pillars of People Success

Today, our People Success function brings together two closely connected areas: People Experience Partners (PEEPs) and People Development. Together, these functions help us balance a great employee experience, strong organisational foundations, and business performance.

People Experience Partners (PEEPs)

Each consultant at Opencast has a People Experience Partner, or PEEP. PEEPs act as dedicated career partners for consultants. They build strong relationships with the people they support and help them navigate their career at Opencast.

This includes:

• Regular one-to-one conversations focused on career goals and development

• Coaching to help consultants grow their skills and confidence

• Supporting people through performance and progression conversations

• Ensuring consultants feel supported and connected, even when working at client sites

• Acting as a bridge between consultants, capability leaders and other teams

Because many of our consultants spend most of their time embedded in client teams, PEEPs play an important role in making sure people still feel supported, heard and connected to Opencast.

People Development

Alongside PEEPs, our People Development team focuses on building capability across the organisation. Their role is to make sure our people have the tools, learning opportunities and development frameworks they need to grow.

This includes:

• Designing learning programmes and development pathways

• Supporting career progression and professional growth

• Creating tools and processes that help people plan their development

• Working with leaders to identify capability needs across the business

• Managing learning platforms and external training providers

In short, People Development builds the structures that enable learning, while PEEPs help people apply that learning in their careers.

How our People Success team brings this to life

People Success at Opencast is delivered by a team who work closely with our consultants and leaders across the business.

Connecting people and business

“Our role as People Success Managers is to make sure our People Success approach works in practice across the organisation. We partner closely with capability leaders and support our PEEPs so they can focus on building strong relationships with consultants.”

Ellie Wilson, People Success Manager

“One key focus is spotting trends early, helping leaders navigate people challenges and making sure our processes genuinely support both our consultants and the needs of the business.”

Supporting consultant careers

“As a PEEP, you become a career partner for the consultants you support. We spend time understanding what motivates people, where they want to grow and how we can help them get there. Sometimes that’s coaching someone through a challenge, sometimes it’s helping them plan their next career step. The goal is always the same: helping people succeed in a way that works for them and for Opencast.”

Chris Wilson, People Experience Partner

Creating opportunities for learning and growth

“Our focus in People Development is on creating the tools and opportunities that help people keep learning. That might be designing development resources, introducing mentoring programmes or creating ways for people to reflect on their growth. The aim is to make learning something that’s embedded in everyday work, rather than something that happens occasionally.”

Ciara Slack, People Development Manager

Balancing people and business needs

One of the biggest evolutions in our People Success approach over the past few years has been balancing individual aspirations with the needs of the business. We’ve learned that the best outcomes happen when we look at people success and business success together.

That means helping consultants:

• develop the skills our clients need

• build fulfilling and sustainable careers

• contribute to the growth of the business

When those things align, everyone benefits. Our clients trust us because of the expertise, professionalism and capability of our consultants.

Recent initiatives from the People Success team include our Growth Journal, a new reflective development tool, and a mentoring programme designed to support learning through shared experience.

Investing in People Success helps us make sure our people are enabled and empowered to do their best work, continue developing their skills and build long-term careers with us.

For us, it’s a core part of how we build a high performing organisation.

Looking ahead

As Opencast continues to grow, our People Success model will keep evolving.

But the core idea will stay the same: When our people succeed, our business and clients succeed too.

And that’s what People Success is really all about.
