Opencast work experience placements are aimed at individuals keen to pursue a career in the technology space.

Our placements will give you experience and insight into life working at a technology consultancy. You’ll explore different areas of Opencast, including software development, product delivery and user-centred design, and meet with our people.

You’ll get first-hand experience in the technology sector, helping you to decide which career path is right for you. 

Opencast work experience

For young people and adults

Opencast work experience placements are split into two cohorts: young people and adults.

The placement for young people is designed for those in full-time education, currently studying in years 11-13.

The adult placement is for those aged 18+, who are job seekers or looking to change your current career or re-join the workforce.

The five-day placements take place in our Newcastle office, situated in Hoult’s Yard.

What you'll do

What’s involved

Our five-day placements aim to give you the broadest possible experience. Over the course of the week, you will gain an insight into what we do, our culture and our people.

You’ll meet with our technical teams, including software development, user-centred design (UCD), and project management, for question and answer sessions.

You’ll learn about agile methodologies and try your hand at Raspberry Pi and Sphero Robots coding.

The placement will give you the opportunity to take part in a user-centred design workshop, looking at how users engage with a product or service and how we use this data to make improvements. 

The week will include time with our Talent Engagement team to learn how to get the best from your CV and how to interview for roles in the technology sector.

This placement will give you experience and insight of life at Opencast and the work we do. You’ll develop an understanding of the types of careers in the technology sector, identify your interests and feel inspired about your future career.

There’ll be opportunities to meet with people who work in the tech sector and ask them questions directly.

You’ll take part in work related tasks, developing your employability skills, such as communication, problem solving and team working. The experience will give you an understanding of employer needs, such as reliability, time keeping, punctuality.

Your work experience at Opencast can be added to your CV to support with future job and course applications.

Am I eligible to take part?

Opencast’s work experience placements are aimed at school or college pupils (currently studying in years 11-13) and adults aged 18+ who are looking for work experience or wanting to make a career move into the technology sector.

 

When do experience placements take place?

Work experience placements happen throughout the year.

The next placements for adults and young people will take place in 2025.

 

Where does the programme take place?

All work experience placements are based at Opencast’s Newcastle HQ. We are unable to offer placements remotely.

We only encourage you to apply if you are able to commute to our office for the full duration of the placement.

 

How long does the placement last?

Work experience placements are two or five days (Monday to Friday), 9.00am-4.00pm.

You will be given a schedule with timings before starting your placement.

 

How many other people will be doing the placement alongside me?

We aim to have 8 people in each work experience placement cohort.

 

Do you run any internships or apprenticeships?

We do not currently offer internships or apprenticeships.

 

Will there be an opportunity to continue to work with Opencast once I have completed the placement?

This placement is an opportunity to support your learning and development and does not guarantee a job at Opencast. The placement offers you the tools and opportunities to expand your network to aid your journey into any desired field.
