Client mission

InsureTheBox is a pioneer of telematics-based car insurance. The business owns its own proprietary technology, which powers devices fitted to customers’ vehicles. Their mission is: to expand the marketplace for this model of car insurance, partly via organic growth, and partly via providing its technology to other major brands as a white-label offer. This strategy depends upon the provision of fast, accurate and scalable technology, delivering real-time data that can be relied upon commercially.

The critical issue

At the time that Opencast began working with them, InsureTheBox had successfully navigated a start-up phase, and was maturing into a substantial and profitable business. However, as the customer base grew, key systems were not coping, and performance and reliability had begun to suffer. In parallel, the business was keen to rapidly release multiple new products, adding to the strain on the core technology platform.

Opencast solution

It soon became clear that the systems performance issues were just part of the challenge. What was needed was an overhaul of the technology development process, so that it could better support a fast-growing business. The Opencast team therefore worked closely with the client’s technology teams to restructure this aspect of operations. New development and testing methodologies were introduced and bedded in. A more rigorous, more formal support function was created. In parallel, core applications and systems were upgraded.

The result

Performance and reliability improved within weeks. The business was able to promote its white label product, confident that it would perform. A major UK retailer reviewed the resulting technology and became a partner. And, in the line with shareholders’ ambitions, the business was acquired by a major European Insurance Conglomerate, interested in taking their proposition to the next level.
