Opencast to host day to help ex-military switch careers

11 March 2025

Opencast is hosting an event which will explore how businesses can benefit from unlocking the potential of military veterans.

Byker-headquartered Opencast will host the event, Military to civilian career switches: how we can all benefit, at Hoults Yard on Tuesday, March 18 (2.30pm – 6pm).

Richard Handley, Opencast’s Client Relationship Director and a former captain in the Royal Artillery, explained: “Our event is aimed at both companies thinking about employing ex-services personnel and also military veterans looking to meet regional employers.

“Throughout the event our focus will be on the benefits of employing veterans but also how to break down the barriers to make it simpler for ex-services people to enter the civilian workforce. We’ll look at how being a forces-friendly employer can be particularly effective in building diverse and inclusive teams.”

A live audience of employers and military veterans will join a panel discussion and an interactive breakout session. The panel will include the following speakers:

  • Ammar Mirza, Executive Chairman of the AmmarM Group and Honorary Colonel of 101 Regiment Royal Artillery
  • Ben Read, Founder and CEO, Redeployable
  • Richard Handley, Client Leadership Director, Opencast
  • Louise Kennedy, Founder and Managing Director at Oculus HR

The panel will be moderated by Opencast’s Chief People Officer at Opencast, Cate Kalson.

Lorna Madden, Opencast’s Director of Talent and Workforce Planning, said: “We hope employers attending the day will gain key insights into tapping into the veteran talent pool and also understand the strategies which can enhance the recruitment of former services personnel.

“We also want employers to recognise practical solutions for addressing any challenges veterans face during career transitions.

“Veterans attending will get an important opportunity to meet employers, many of whom are part of a strong and effective network wanting to help ex-service people. They’ll also have the opportunity to explore new and exciting career pathways.”

Ammar Mirza added: “I’m grateful to Opencast for organising and hosting the Military to civilian career switches event. It’s a great opportunity for regional employers to learn how employing former services personnel can benefit their companies. Military veterans typically possess a strong work ethic, excellent leadership skills, adaptability to high-pressure situations and a wide range of technical skills acquired through military training.

“Time and time again we’ve seen how veterans can be valuable assets in a range of industries – they bring a strong set of transferable skills that can benefit so many different workplaces.

“From a veteran’s point of view, the session will link them up to key regional employers, giving them valuable insight into what skills and experiences are needed in the world of work outside of the armed services.

Forces-friendly Opencast signed the Ministry of Defence backed Armed Forces Covenant, confirming a commitment to serving military personnel, former servicemen and women and reservists, four years ago. The company has also been recognised by the government-backed Employer Recognition Scheme (ERS) which acknowledges businesses that have provided exceptional support to the armed forces community.

Richard Handley added: “Opencast is committed to ensuring the company does as much as it can to help those who are serving and have served. We are always on the look-out for great people – as are many other regional employers – and there is a constant pipeline of talent leaving the armed forces.”

The event is free, but booking is essential. Book your place here.
