Lightning talk

Lessons from service design

On Wednesday 1 March at Opencast HQ in Newcastle, we're joined by four expert speakers who will share their experiences on service design.

This session, the latest in our lightning talks series, is designed mainly for those in the public sector, and partners. It's a free hybrid event – and you can register using the link below. It runs from 5-7pm.

Our four speakers bring a variety of perspectives on service design:

Amanda Wowk, content designer, Opencast
Using priority guides to design services: Amanda’s background is in content design with extensive experience of working in the public and private sectors. She’ll share how using priority guides to design services can help you build better experiences for users.

Laura Smith, content and service design lead, Unboxed
Can you scale up a truly user-centred service to different use cases?  Laura shares her experience in digital healthcare and the NHS, talking through the challenges of scaling up a successful service while maintaining a focus on user needs.

Dr Aysar Ghassan, lead in MA in automotive & transport design, Coventry University
The dangers of design thinking: Aysar’s PhD identified serious flaws in research that underpins our belief in ‘design thinking’ and a ‘language of design thinking’, which is a set of terms and phrases used to cover over up these flaws.

Anth Elstob, design lead, Opencast
How to build good working relationships: Anth shares some points on the importance of building good working relationships. He will give some tips that have helped him from the last 10 years of working in user-centred design roles.

Event format

We're running this as a hybrid event, hosting in person and online. You can join us at Opencast HQ in Newcastle, or online using Zoom. Members of the audience will be able to ask questions and add comments during the session.

Each speaker will share a 10-minute lightning talk during the session.

Drinks and food will be provided for the in-person event – let us know any dietary requirements when booking your free ticket. Those joining us at Opencast HQ are invited to stay afterwards for drinks and networking!
