Opencast charity support grows in 2022

Blog

The past year has seen a significant increase in activity across Opencast to support charitable causes – with new commitments from the business as well as an uptick in voluntary activities from our people to support good causes UK-wide and overseas.

The increase in our charitable activity reflects our determination to give back and make a difference to wider society. With so many struggling with the cost of living crisis at home, and crises hitting hard internationally, an extra effort is needed more than ever before.

Opencast’s charitable efforts are steered by an internal working group of volunteers, who meet regularly to agree priorities for action.

Significant milestone

This year, which marks our 10th in business, Opencast has passed a significant milestone in its direct donations to charities, passing the £100,000 mark in donations overall. As a business we are committed to giving back 2.5% of our profits to good causes.

This year for the first time, we asked our people to choose the 10 charities they want the business to support from its profits donation. After a company-wide vote, we have made donations totalling over £50,000 to non-profits working in the North East, UK wide and internationally.

Our 2022 donations cover charities working in poverty and inequality, housing and homelessness, environment and sustainability, health and medical, and international focus. You can read more about our charities of choice here.

We’re grateful for the support in our donations by the efforts of the Community Foundation Tyne & Wear and Northumberland, which administers the Opencast charitable fund. Since 2019, the foundation has already helped us support 17 charities based in and around the English North East.

Our with-profits charitable commitment is part of Opencast’s '10 good things' initiative, detailing the activities that we are committed to support in our 10th anniversary year.

Among other ‘10 good things’ we are committed to in 2022 are:

  • match funding of the first £250 of all individual fundraising efforts
  • tax-efficient donations to charity through give-as-you-earn payroll giving
  • volunteering on beach clean-ups, litter picking and other environmental activity
  • support for the St Oswald’s Hospice 2023 art trail
  • support for the Ouseburn Family Pride event on 18 September
  • fundraisers through five-a-side football and sponsored walks
  • collection boxes for food banks at our HQ and three regional hub offices.

The war in Ukraine, with the resulting humanitarian and refugee crisis, has been front of mind for so many of us. That’s why, in addition to the efforts above, Opencast has made a donation to Ukraine-focused aid agency Operation Safe Drop. Our £30,000 donation is helping seed the agency’s efforts on the refugee front line – and why our 10th anniversary raffle chose the Ukraine aid effort as its beneficiary.

We’re aware that charitable donations are only part of what’s needed to help solve some of the big challenges out there. But we hope that the work of our people, alongside our corporate commitments, can make a difference to people’s lives both at home and abroad.
