Walking the talk on sustainability

Back

In our drive to make a positive impact on society, Opencast is committed to more sustainable working and a greener, cleaner, future for all.

Words into action

As a business Opencast is committed to reducing our environmental footprint through a carbon reduction plan, working with specialist tools to record energy and other consumption.

Opencast supports sustainable travel and transport. Using the government’s cycle-to-work scheme, we encourage our people to help save the planet at the same time as saving themselves money. Staff can also use the scheme to buy an electric bike tax free.

Through a partnership with electric car leasing business TCH Salsa, our people can lease a new electric or hybrid car through a salary sacrifice scheme. Vehicles come fully serviced, maintained and insured. We have EV charge points installed outside our office.

We are committed to new hybrid forms of working, which gives our people the option of working from home if they want and can. This in turn reduces our employee travel emissions. In our new headquarters in Newcastle, we have deployed smart office tech that incudes power saving for example with monitors that go into power save when no motion is detected.

We're confident that combined, our efforts will move us towards our net zero target.

Work that matters

As part of our commitment to give our people interesting work for organisations that matter to them, we work with clients in the renewables sector, supporting their green ambitions by helping them design new products and services.

This includes work with the Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult on helping to making wind turbines more efficient, and with EV charging business Elmtronics/Mer on improving the experience of people using its EV charge points.

Opencast is fully behind the United Nations sustainable development goals (SDGs) and as a business contribute to SDGs including on climate change.

Sustainable goals

We enable and educate our people to take ownership and align their endeavours to the SDGs, using people, process and technology. And we're committed to making sustainability one of the goals of employee performance, rewarding and recognising individual efforts.

We work on culture change by embedding sustainability as a key business objective. We foster and invest in innovation, working to design products and services that meet environmental requirements, as well as working with partners to integrate sustainability into our innovation pipeline.

Through our company-wide charity programme, we match employee fundraising and a day of leave a year for charity work including with environmental charities.
