All about working for Opencast

Potential made powerful.

We do things a bit differently.

We pride ourselves in our abilities, our people and our clients who trust us to deliver important core services.

Why you should join Opencast

Opencast specialises in developing end-to-end enterprise solutions for government, financial services, health and social care and renewable energy sectors.

We work with UK and global businesses to solve their complex problems such as:

  • improving the accuracy of prescription drug information for the country’s pharmacies
  • making the UK tax system easier to navigate
  • organising data from every wind farm in the UK

We tell it as it is.

We’re a company of talented practitioners who do what’s best for our clients – always, without fail and without question.

Our core mantra is ‘Build It Right.’

We’re passionate about the outcome, and how we get there. We want to leave our clients in a far better place than when we arrived.

We’ve made our name providing industry-leading software development and support services and are building a reputation for delivering fully end-to-end enterprise solutions.

That means we’re with our clients right through the journey from the initial strategy and architecture, service and user centred design, through build, platforms and support.

Our services

Combining our expertise in enterprise, solution and technical architecture to deliver new services successfully in line with what our clients need.

DevOps, cloud and platform engineering

Bringing engineers together to deliver cost savings, reduced time to market, improved scalability and greater flexibility.

User-centred design

Putting users at the heart of what we do by leaving no stone unturned to ensure our services work for them.

Live services support

Maintaining critical and complex products, platforms and infrastructure, working collaboratively with a focus on continuous improvement.

Software, digital and technical delivery

Working across the development lifecycle and using industry-leading languages, frameworks and operating systems. We do agile transformation and improve ways of working.

Our clients

We think the work we do is important and exciting.

Because of the nature of what we do, we can’t say too much about the work we do with some of our clients, but here’s what we can share.

We have worked with the Digital Delivery Centre for more than seven years on the digital transformation piece of the UK’s tax platform.

We have undertaken projects across live services, tax credits, Brexit and recently Covid projects. The solutions were p rovided by teams made up of purely Opencast consultants, and by teams where Opencast consultants worked with existing project teams.

Opencast has had a close relationship with NHSBSA for almost a decade – they were our second client.

Our work with the authority started with an NHS re- organisation in 2012 and we’ve since provided program management, Websphere administration, Java, COBOL and Oracle software development.

We’ve also program managed and executed many system changes, re- platformed mainframes and provided core architect services. Opencast consultants are now supplementing the NHSBSA on many of its digital offerings including NHS Jobs.

We’ve worked with DWP since 2018.

Our initial team of DevOps has grown across Integration, Children and Health in DevOps, Development, Quality Assurance (QA), Content Design (CD), Interaction Design (IxD) and User Research (UR) roles.

Opencast has helped augment teams, bringing expertise and key skills and providing additional capacity. Opencast has also been working with DWP on the API- platform.

We have played an important role in helping to keep the platform stable, despite a huge increase in demand because of the Covid crisis.

Our DWP partnership has enabled DevOps BAU improvement; increased efficiency and reduced silos and errors through automation, infrastructure monitoring, workflow modifications, knowledge share and centralised documentation.

Morgan Stanley

Opencast has been helping its development teams in key business critical financial services areas, working in both Java and Scala.

During our four-year relationship with Morgan Stanley, we’ve also helped them get an industry leading MIFID II rating, and we continue to manage the accurate reporting of billions going through a worldwide core system.

JP Morgan & Chase

Opencast is supplying a full scrum team to build a Data Analytics calculation engine for the bank. The data is comprised of all data streams across the bank and identifies where information is created and where it flows.

This also allows the bank to understand if any regulatory requirements are being breached and can identify if applications can be made redundant.

SAGE Financial

Sage is running a large transformation programme across its products, including an ETL project, with Opencast Software at its forefront.

Opencast is also supporting a number of other key projects including transforming monolithic legacy systems to cloud infrastructure.

To do so we are utilising cloud tech such as serverless technologies (AWS Lambda), Infrastructure as code (Terraform) and orchestration via Kubernetes.

Our people, culture, and values

Our people are honest, hardworking, open, and confident – we are smart self-starters happy to think independently and always ready to use our initiative to help our clients.

We like people who chip in and take responsibility for company stuff outside of their remit. That includes picking up the milk if it’s there when you arrive for work.

We strive to protect our family culture - something so many firms tend to leave by the wayside as they grow.

Our ambitious, controlled growth will not be at the expense of our culture, and we place our people at the centre of our organisation. We empower our people and provide them with the support to do the best job possible.

We’re not big on hierarchy. To keep the organisation nimble and responsive we do have a reporting structure, but it’s never overbearing and there is a minimum of red tape or fuss.

We want innovators, self-starting thinkers who thrive working on responsibility, so our management structure is there to encourage and develop that approach.

We’ve formed key partnerships to ensure our culture remains at the core of who we are and how we work.

One such partnership is with a diversity and inclusion training and consultancy company that specialises in gender balance; another is with Stonewall, Europe’s largest lesbian, gay, bi and trans (LGBT) charity. Here’s what a few members of our team said about working with us:

“The company handbook, Don’t Step Over the Milk, summed it up for me. It was a great insight into the way the company thinks and operates. It trusts you to do the job, it expects you to work hard and wants you to have fun."

“The culture is relaxed and laid back, but everyone works hard. Everyone is smart, intelligent, but also friendly and approachable. There’s no hierarchy here, and I feel I can take ideas and suggestions to anyone, whereas in my previous job this was often more difficult.”

"I love the fact that personal development is important here.”

“When you land somewhere like this, the passion that other people have for what they do is so infectious that it can only help you positively.”

“We’re a relatively small company, although we do some vital work for important clients. But we’re also a great company to work for, you very much feel part of the family.”

“My favourite thing about working for Opencast is the freedom, and that Opencast encourages me to educate myself and spend money on my learning.”

We are growing

The last 12 months have been fantastic for Opencast. We have increased our headcount by 50 per cent since January 2020 despite the COVID lockdown.

A big part of our growth has been in our UCD service for projects in Government, health and social care, and global financial corporations. Roles within this team include user researchers; user experience designers and content designers.

In response to an increase in work across the company, we’ve also recruited software developers, DevOps engineers and business analysts.

Tech for good

Beyond the value we deliver for our clients, Opencast plays a leading role in growing the tech sector. We are committed to making a positive impact on society.

We contribute to the North East technology sector as a founder of the non-profit Dynamo North East campaign.

Our people share what they know with the community to help improve skills and industry knowledge - including at the annual Build IT Right conference. We’re active participants in developer communities, are STEM ambassadors and run voluntary code clubs for young people.

Co-founder Mike O’Brien

What is your role here at Opencast Software?

I’m the co-chair and co-founder. I make sure we have good work to do and that we have an evolving strategy of what it means to be a tech consultancy company in the 21st century.

Why is Opencast different to other IT Consultancy firms?

We are founded and run by technology people. We are super focused on building technology right and carrying out consultancy the right way - focusing on the client’s needs at all times. This isn’t typical in IT consulting!

What kind of people do you look for?

Really smart people - and that’s not to do with the type of clothes you wear. We love curious, thoughtful people who are self-starters and who really understand true teamwork. That’s our team and the team we build with our clients.

Favourite film and why?

It has to be Goodfellas - amazing cast, beautifully filmed and never fails to pull you in every time you watch it. Close second is Withnail and I. Comedy genius. Endless quotes.

Co-founder Charlie Hoult

What is your role here at Opencast Software?

While Mike is an industry and client ambassador, I fret about the ‘plumbing’ inside our business: finance, HR, marketing, training, offices. I’ve worked extensively in tech start-ups, so input to the team on strategy. I also chair Dynamo, connecting Opencast with universities and other tech firms in the region on skills and innovation.

Why is Opencast different to other IT Consultancy firms?

We have a mantra around ‘Good Team Work’. We are driven to create social value in our activity around diversity, sustainability and community. We’re all about growing careers and supporting our team. And, we want to do great work – the more complex and brain-taxing the better.

What kind of people do you look for?

We love a broad mix and don’t stipulate anyone’s background. OC folk have joined us from all sorts of paths and from 20+ countries across the world, which adds to the diversity of opinion. It’s a state of mind that we seek – ambitious, enthusiastic, inquisitive.

Favourite film and why?

During Lockdown, I loved Call My Agent. It’s a French farce based on a Paris agency managing celebrities – full of vitality and office intrigue, but also the fun and spirit of working together to beat the competitors and keep (sometimes difficult!) clients happy.
